Shawn VanSlyke is a Director within Control Risks’ Crisis and Security Consulting Practice for North America, based in Washington, DC. Shawn focuses on issues of workplace violence within the corporate environment, specializing in threat assessment, case management, and the creation of prevention and response programs.
Shawn also specializes in providing assessment/management to clients navigating the spectrum of potentially violent insiders, from the personally aggrieved to the ideologically motivated. Shawn collaborates with key stakeholders— including executive management, legal and human resources—to develop creative threat management strategies to protect the organization and the workforce. With significant experience in violent extremist ideology, mediation/alternative dispute resolution, and hostage negotiation, Shawn offers solution-based strategies for clients facing myriad challenges from both internal and external sources.
Highlights of Shawn's recent experiences include:
- Shawn was a senior FBI Manager and recognized subject matter expert in crisis intervention and risk management. He has over ten years of combined leadership experience in advancing the FBI’s behavioral and negotiation specialty programs, with an emphasis on assessing and managing violent extremists.
- Shawn’s most recent assignment included oversight of the FBI's multi-agency Behavioral Threat Assessment Center (BTAC), which routinely collaborates with the private sector to fashion innovative insider threat and workplace violence prevention and management strategies.
- Shawn significantly contributed to the creation of the new US policy that directs national operations and policy for international hostage matters. He also supervised robust global training initiatives including the premier negotiation certification course for US and foreign law enforcement partners.
Shawn served as an FBI Special Agent and supervisor for over 20 years and has vast experience as a case agent in all aspects of taking complex criminal matters from investigation through successful prosecution. Shawn served as the Chief of the FBI's elite Behavioral Analysis Unit and the Crisis Negotiation Unit.
Shawn holds a law degree from Cleveland Marshall College of Law School, and has been a member of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Bar Association since 1998.
He is a regular contributor to media, appearing on Good Morning America and Dateline. In 2010, he co-authored an FBI publication on Campus Safety, Assessing and Managing Threats. He also served as the law enforcement working group chair for the ASIS standard on workplace violence.
